Location

Working from home, however successful candidate will be expected to regularly meet with fishers throughout the north west for the post.

Salary

An honorarium of £275 per day will be paid and travel & subsistence costs will be reimbursed.

Description

Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups (RIFG) are non-statutory bodies that provide fishers a strong voice in matters that affect them and develop projects for fisheries improvement (out to twelve nautical miles). Their aim is to work with fishers and Marine Scotland to improve the sustainable management of inshore fisheries.

Marine Scotland seeks to appoint this role, for an initial period running from March 2023 until July 2024.

Role Description

This post is for a Chairperson to work up to 12 days per month*. The activities of the RIFG network are guided by Marine Scotland strategies, including the Blue Economy Vision, 2020-2030 Fisheries Management Strategy, Scottish Strategy for Seafood and National Marine Plan. The successful candidate will play an integral role in developing its function, in-step with these strategies. The Chairperson will be a fair, impartial and credible representative for inshore fishing businesses of all sizes and prepared to work proactively to expand and promote the network.

Main duties include:

• Being responsible for general meetings (typically 4 per year) that are properly structured and follow an agreed agenda, developing a productive relationship amongst all members and acting as a mediator when problems and conflicts arise.
• Attending ad hoc meetings with other national Chairs, Marine Scotland Officials and Ministers.
• Taking responsibility for coordinating, developing and maintaining a Operational Plan, aligned with priorities under the 2020-2030 Fisheries Management Strategy.
• Taking a proactive approach to meeting and engaging with fishing businesses ofall sizes across the region, where appropriate, developing and maintaining strong links with district Fishery Offices to achieve this.
• General management tasks, including administrative support (where necessary), quarterly reports and budgetary provisions.
• Authoring relevant content for upload to the RIFG website.

Person Specification:

No formal qualifications are required. Applicants should have:

• Experience of chairing boards or committees.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with industry, Government and the public.
• Ability to form strong relationships that generate confidence in the network a enable collaborative working towards shared goals.

Desirable but not essential:

Knowledge of the Scottish fishing industry or policy development in the marine sector.
