This project uses virtual reality head sets to take outdoor experiences of fishing and the marine environment out into the community to folk that wouldn't be able to experience them otherwise.
Visits involve looking at historic marine artefacts and photos that are supplied by local fishers and history groups, to start conversation and reminiscence. There is also the opportunity for folk to try on the virtual headsets and experience virtually being thrown off the pier in a creel and then waiting under water as crabs creep in to join you. Or perhaps a visit to a creel boat on Yell Sound and another favourite is a view of the varied and multicoloured underwater landscape just below the water level at Scalloway pier. As this project evolves we are working with local fishers to capture more local Shetland fishing and marine experiences for folk to enjoy through the headsets.
