Orkney RIFG Interim Meeting (on-line only)
DescriptionPlease find below a link to the online meeting to discuss possible ‘Orkney specific’ interim measures, on Tuesday 12 March 2024 at 7.30pm.
This follows on from the discussion at the last RIFG meeting when Stuart Bell introduced Marine Directorate’s “Measures to Improve Inshore Fisheries in Scotland Roadmap”. Some regions in Scotland have expressed that their stocks of Crab and Lobster are under pressure, although this has not been voiced in Orkney. This, along with Stock analysis published last year, has prompted Scottish ministers and Marine Directorate to look for “locally based interim measures” whilst a full review and consultation, based on scientific data, is planned to start later in the year.
Marine Directorate are clear that although there is a tight timeframe, with the next FMAC inshore subgroup being held on Thursday 14 March 2024, this is not a hard stop date and conversations will continue. They state “The input of stakeholders in our rural and island communities will be central to these discussions”.
I believe that, whilst ongoing conversations about the accuracy of current stock and how Fsmy is set, it is important for us to engage with this process so that we can control what happens in our waters.
Please feel free to share this link with any other Orkney Fishermen who may wish to contribute ideas.
Kind regards
Phil

Orkney RIFG Meeting
DescriptionOrkney Regional Inshore Fishing Group is here to give the Fishermen of Orkney a strong voice in these challenging times. Your views, knowledge and experience are much needed to ensure Orkney is at the centre of future planning. This will also be an opportunity to meet the new Chair, Phil Bennett and to ask direct questions of a representative of Marine Scotland, who has been invited to attend.
The Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups (RIFGs) aim to improve the management of inshore fisheries in the 0-12 nautical mile zone of Scottish waters, and to give commercial inshore fishermen a strong voice in wider marine management developments.
